BitTorrent, finalmente un peer-to-peer veloce?

Una originale tecnologia di distribuzione dei file promette di risolvere gli intasamenti dei siti e i download interminabili e inaffidabili che caratterizzano gli attuali programmi di scambio file. L'autore vi invita a collaudarla tentando di intasargli il server, con risultati sorprendenti (continua... )
Se vi siete mai dilettati con i programmi peer-to-peer, come il defunto Napster e gli attuali WinMx, Gnutella, Edonkey e parenti assortiti, vi sarete ben presto accorti dei loro problemi fondamentali: per i file più richiesti c'è sempre una coda interminabile, che quando finalmente si smaltisce offre scaricamenti lentissimi. Per aggiungere l'ingiuria al danno, dopo giorni e giorni di download capita spesso di scoprire che il file scaricato con tanta pena è danneggiato o incompleto. Succede addirittura che non sia neppure il file che si desiderava, visto che ci sono anche i burloni che rinominano i file, per cui uno crede di scaricarsi Il Signore degli Anelli e si ritrova con un film porno con i sottotitoli in danese (o viceversa).
Lo stesso accade per molti siti Web, che diventano inaccessibili in occasione di eventi particolari che producono un picco di visitatori: esempi tipici sono la pubblicazione dei trailer di un film di richiamo o il rilascio di una nuova versione di Linux. L'intasamento colpisce anche i siti amatoriali quando vengono citati dalle riviste online, tant'è vero che esiste il termine slashdotted per indicare un sito inaccessibile perché sovraccarico di visitatori

Bram Cohen, noto come organizzatore del CodeCon (raduno di hacker ed esperti di sviluppo di applicazioni peer-to-peer e di sicurezza online, fortemente orientato alla tutela delle libertà individuali), ha scritto una soluzione originale a questi problemi, chiamata BitTorrent (letteralmente “torrente di bit”), che verrà presentata all'imminente conferenza Defcon X a Las Vegas ed è in fase di collaudo in questi giorni. I primi risultati sono impressionanti.
Quando un sito desidera rendere disponibile uno o più file per il download ma non ha banda sufficiente per gestire la prevista orda di utenti, può installare il server gratuito BitTorrent. Gli utenti che desiderano scaricare il file usano il client di BitTorrent, che è facilissimo da installare (è disponibile gratuitamente come plug-in per qualsiasi browser Windows e Unix/Linux, codice sorgente compreso, e non richiede neppure di riavviare il browser), e non fanno altro che cliccare nel proprio browser preferito su un link che conduce al file, esattamente come si fa per il normale scaricamento da una pagina Web di Internet.
E qui comincia la magia: a differenza dei normali download tragicamente lenti, il file viene ricevuto alla massima velocità ammessa dalla connessione dell'utente che sta scaricando, anche se in quel momento migliaia di altre persone stanno scaricando lo stesso file. Anzi, paradossalmente più sono numerosi gli utenti che scaricano un determinato file, più è probabile che si raggiunga la massima velocità di scaricamento.
Provare per credere: Cohen vi invita ad aiutarlo a collaudare BitTorrent installando il client e poi scaricando un file da circa 340 megabyte (contiene l'audio MP3 delle relazioni presentate alla CodeCon, che fra l'altro sono molto educative se sapete l'inglese). Roba da far schiattare anche un server professionale massicciamente connesso alla Rete. Invece il file vi arriva sul PC alla massima velocità di download che la vostra connessione è in grado di offrire.
Questo risultato apparentemente senza senso si ottiene mediante un trucco molto ingegnoso. Il client di BitTorrent è in realtà anche un piccolo server, per cui ogni utente che scarica il file diventa a sua volta fornitore dello stesso file ad altri utenti prima ancora che sia finito il download, e così via in cascata.
Confusi? Provo a chiarire con un esempio. Supponiamo che venga pubblicata online, come avviene periodicamente, una distribuzione masterizzabile di Linux: tre o più bei file ISO da seicento megabyte l'uno. Per come funziona il Web adesso, appena viene dato l'annuncio della pubblicazione il sito che ospita i file riceve un'ondata di richieste di download che lo rallentano fino alla paralisi.
Spesso si cerca di alleviare il problema distribuendo il carico di richieste su più siti (mirror), ma questo costringe gli utenti a cercare, manualmente e alla cieca, i mirror liberi, e comunque risolve poco, come ben sa chiunque abbia cercato di scaricare una nuova versione di Linux o di altro software molto richiesto, come OpenOffice.org, nei giorni immediatamente successivi al rilascio.
Con BitTorrent, invece, il primo utente dell'orda si collega al sito ospitante e inizia a scaricare alla massima velocità possibile, dato che è l'unico utente che sta accedendo al sito. Contemporaneamente (dunque prima che abbia terminato il download), rende disponibile ad altri utenti la parte di file scaricata. Il secondo utente che richiede il file lo scarica dal primo utente anziché dal sito originale; il terzo utente lo scarica dal secondo (e contemporaneamente anche dal primo, se ha ancora banda disponibile); il quarto dal terzo e da tutti gli altri che hanno ancora banda disponibile, e così via.
br>In pratica, se aumenta il numero di utenti interessati a scaricare un determinato file, aumenta grosso modo di pari passo il numero di fonti disponibili. Si forma così un vero e proprio torrente di bit (donde il nome) che s'ingrossa man mano che si diffonde per la Rete. Tutto il procedimento è gestito in modo invisibile all'utente. Geniale.
Questione di integrità
A dire il vero il principio in sé non è particolarmente nuovo: programmi peer-to-peer come WinMX sono già in grado di scaricare da più fonti contemporaneamente e rendere disponibili agli altri utenti i file in corso di scaricamento. Le novità di BitTorrent sono la sua facilità d'uso (è invisibile) e soprattutto la garanzia dell'integrità del file scaricato, che viene verificato con il diffusissimo algoritmo di autenticazione SHA-1. Questo significa che il file ricevuto è sicuramente uguale all'originale pubblicato sul sito. Invece di navigare in un mare di file di dubbia genuinità, con BitTorrent si ha l'affidabilità che deriva dal conoscere la fonte di quello che si scarica.
Tuttavia non è ancora giunto il momento di cestinare l'attuale software P2P. Proprio perché la fonte dei file scaricabili è nota, non conviene che usiate BitTorrent per distribuire la musica delle grandi case discografiche, i film e i telefilm, a meno che siano (caso raro) legalmente distribuibili. BitTorrent è ideale per distribuire materiale legale a costo zero a un grande numero di utenti, non per fare pirateria.
Ad armi pari
Il vero beneficiario di tecnologie come quella di BitTorrent non è né il pirata né l'azienda, ma l'utente comune, che si trova ora ad avere (virtualmente) le stesse risorse di un sito commerciale. Diventa molto più facile ed economico distribuire il software libero e i contenuti creati dagli utenti (musica, letteratura, manuali, immagini, video). Farsi leggere, vedere o sentire da milioni di utenti non è più un privilegio di chi può pagare fior di soldi per “avere banda”. Immagino che le case discografiche gradiranno poco questo software, visto che le rende assai meno indispensabili per la diffusione della musica.
Resta la vera sfida, quella di sempre: saper creare qualcosa che meriti di essere condivisa. Per questo, purtroppo, non c'è tecnologia che tenga.
