Blending action and survival horror, Resident Evil 6 promises to be the dramatic horror experience of 2013. Resident Evil favorites Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield and Ada Wong are joined by new characters, including Jake Muller, to face a new horror, the highly virulent C-virus, as the narrative moves between North America, the war-torn Eastern European state of Edonia and the Chinese city of Lanshiang.

Starting with three distinct, yet interwoven story threads, each with their own pair of protagonists for either solo or co-op play, both offline and online, not only will Resident Evil 6 deliver both different perspectives and gameplay styles but, with the introduction of the innovative Crossover mechanic players will be able to team up and share the horror. Techland torna al primo amore facendoci vivere l’epopea del vecchio bounty hunter Silas Greaves!

Abbandonate (fortunatamente) le torride atmosfere moderne del precedente The Cartel, il franchise Call of Juarez dei polacchi Techland torna alle origini, quelle del selvaggio West con Gunslinger, un vero e proprio omaggio a coloro che amano la Frontiera, i polverosi saloon, le verdi praterie e le cavalcate al tramonto, il tutto poi condito dall’incontro-scontro con i leggendari pistoleri che tutti abbiamo imparato a conoscere in decine di pellicole hollywoodiane e perché no nel nostrano Tex. Insomma una vera e propria enciclopedia del West, impreziosita poi da un peculiare impianto narrativo, molto raffinato e inventivo, che esalta la pubblicazione in digital delivery del titolo, proposto su PC, PlayStation Network e Xbox Live.

Piombo a secchiate

Siamo ad Abilene, è il 1910. Il vecchio Silas Greaves, leggendario cacciatore di taglie entra in un saloon, e qui inizia a raccontare la sua storia a degli interessati avventori. Le missioni che compongono la campagna sono i suoi ricordi, Silas narra, anzi ci narra, con una costante voce off per tutto il gioco, la sua epopea, la sua lunga cavalcata che gli ha fatto incontrare gente come Billy The Kid o Butch Cassidy senza dimenticare ovviamente le bande di fuorilegge più pericolose dell’epoca. Ma i ricordi di un vecchio non sono certamente scritti nella pietra: spesso e volentieri il livello cambierà forma sotto i nostri piedi, alcuni personaggi caleranno dall’alto come proprio come la manna dal cielo, oppure se una sezione finirà male, Silas ci avvertirà che non è proprio andata così, facendoci rigiocarla come si ricorda in quel momento. Insomma una bella soluzione, straniante e usata intelligentemente con parsimonia, perfettamente inserita poi nello scontro tra la Storia, quella ufficiale e quella che Silas si ricorda a suo modo. Si rimane insomma piacevolmente sorpresi e ci si diverte nell’osservare come Techland abbia “ampliato” la marcata linearità del gameplay. Da un punto di vista prettamente ludico Call of Juarez: Gunslinger è uno sparatutto in prima persona estremamente classico e senza fronzoli, benché non manchino alcune trovate a movimentare le blande sparatorie. Proprio le sparatorie, non i duelli o gli scontri con i boss, sono la parte più debole del titolo. Di fatto la scelta di impostare il tutto all’insegna di un arcade totale, veloce e frenetico ha reso le meccaniche di gioco quasi pari ad una shooting gallery alla Mad Dog McRee, in cui l’intelligenza artificiale si limita ad alzarsi ed abbassarsi dalla coperture (lasciando quasi sempre buona parte del corpo alla nostra mercè), facendosi trovare anche ben allo scoperto per favorire preziosi headshot. Insomma lo scripting fa di tutto per permetterci di impiombare i cowboy avversari muovendoci velocemente di copertura in copertura, ma nello stesso tempo l’ariosità dei livelli e il buon numero di nemici presenti che ci attaccano da tutti i lati riescono a porre una buona sfida, sopratutto quando si va avanti nel gioco. A movimentare di più queste blande meccaniche, oltre a dei francamente inutili quick time event, Techland ha inserito una duplice declinazione del bullet time. La prima, “attiva”, chiamata Concentrazione, ci permette di attivare il ralenty dopo una buona serie di colpi andati a segno, in special modo i letali headshot: i nemici vengono evidenziati in rosso e vanno a terra al primo colpo. Quella “passiva” ci permette di schivare un proiettile quando siamo prossimi alla morte, con una bella animazione su schermo che fa tanto Matrix. Inoltre è presente anche una leggera, ma efficace, crescita “ruolistica” di Silas. Al salire di livello è possibile accedere a tre rami distinti che aumentano l’efficacia del protagonista nell’utilizzare due pistole, fucili e shotgun, andando a sbloccare veri e propri “perks” come la possibilità di ricaricare più velocemente, di mirare meglio, di rallentare il tempo brevemente senza accedere alla Concentrazione e molto altro. Vecchie leggende

Dove il gioco riesce a slegarsi da meccaniche tanto veloci e frenetiche quanto tutto sommato blande e poco incisive è negli scontri con i boss e sopratutto nei duelli all’ultimo sangue. I primi sono per la maggior parte dei casi ben coreografati e ci impegnano nell’utilizzare a fondo e con cognizione di causa tutto il nostro arsenale, dalle pistole ai fucili di precisione, passando per la dinamite, rigorosamente con miccia corta. Riescono efficacemente a diversificare l’azione e sopratutto non vanno presi sottogamba, memori della vita facile nelle missioni, altrimenti il game over è garantito. La dinamica dei duelli è stata invece restituita mediante l’utilizzo contemporaneo due due stick. Con quello sinistro dobbiamo avvicinare la mano destra alla pistola per favorire una veloce estrazione (una percentuale ci dice chiaramente come stiamo andando) mentre con quello destro ci è chiesto di seguire e quindi focalizzarci sull’obiettivo. Non dobbiamo sparare prima che il nostro avversario faccia la prima mossa, se lo facciamo, sentendo il nostro cuore battere all’impazzata, vinciamo facile, ma diremo addio ai preziosi punti esperienza, venendo inoltre bollati di codardia. La tensione è tanta, bisogna davvero coordinarsi ed estrarre col giusto tempismo, altrimenti verremmo fatti fuori senza pietà. Oppure verremo ricordati per degli infami che uccidono senza onore. L’offerta di gioco messa in piedi da Techland non termina qui. Accanto alla campagna principale, trovano spazio la Modalità Arcade e Duello. La prima estremizza al massimo, come dice il nome, le basi arcade delle meccaniche di gioco, e ci invita, anzi ci spinge a correre per i livelli inanellando combo su combo per far salire il moltiplicatore del punteggio, il tutto utilizzando l’arsenale che la sfida ci mette a disposizione. Duello invece si concentra solo nell’affrontare tutte le leggende del titolo con solo cinque vite a disposizione. Anche qui riflessi e concentrazione sono necessari per arrivare alla fine. A livello visivo Techland ha utilizzato la tecnica del cel shading per portarci nel Far West. Il motore proprietario Chrome Engine fa un discreto lavoro nel mettere in scena livelli piuttosto vari e indubbiamente evocativi che fanno il paio con la buona caratterizzazione di Silas e dei fuorilegge “più in vista”. Ovviamente dato il poco spazio a disposizione in un titolo in digital delivery non possiamo aspettarci nulla di eccezionale, e di fatto Gunslinger soffre di queste limitazioni, ma ha comunque un buon impatto anche se la modellazione, il dettaglio e la pulizia generale non possono non finire tra i contro a fondo recensione. Quello che più conta però, al netto delle criticità di cui sopra è che Call of Juarez: Gunslinger ci porta con efficacia nei territori di Frontiera, cosa questa che fa quasi passare in secondo piano una cosmesi buona ma non memorabile. Gearbox non molla la presa su Borderlands 2, rilasciando un nuovo personaggio giocabile

Dopo la sostanziosa infornata di contenuti scaricabili che ha accompagnato i mesi immediatamente successivi all’uscita di Borderlands 2, Gearbox si è presa un po’ di tempo per lavorare su ulteriore materiale con il quale arricchire la già corposa esperienza ludica del proprio sparatutto cooperativo: nell’attesa di poter giocare su nuovi scenari con la quarta espansione prevista per giugno, coloro che ancora bazzicano sulle aride superfici di Pandora possono già sperimentare le peculiari abilità di Krieg lo Psycho, la nuova classe disponibile per il download. La scelta di Gearbox per questa seconda classe extra (la prima era la Mechromante Gaige) è indubbiamente coraggiosa, in primis per il puro e semplice look di Krieg, del tutto simile agli Psycho che ogni giocatore di Borderlands che si rispetti ha imparato ad eliminare a distanza di sicurezza per evitare i loro potenti fendenti corpo a corpo nonché i tentativi di attacchi kamikaze. Fa dunque una certa impressione avere fra le fila del proprio gruppo un brutto ceffo a torso nudo alto e muscoloso, a con la faccia coperta da una maschera e con una spiccata propensione all’autolesionismo. E si, perché oltre ad essere equiparabile ai propri “colleghi” nell’aspetto estetico, Krieg lo è anche nel comportamento sul campo di battaglia, rivelandosi un personaggio indicato prevalentemente a tutti quegli utenti che amano gettarsi nella mischia senza pensare troppo alle conseguenze. Una prima indicazione in tal senso viene dall’abilità speciale attivabile premendo il dorsale destro, grazie alla quale è possibile sfoderare la devastante ascia in possesso del protagonista ed utilizzarla alternativamente per menare fendenti o per lanciarla all’indirizzo di nemici più lontani: come per tutte le altri classi di Borderlands 2, si tratta di una caratteristica espandibile in maniera sostanzialmente diversa a seconda del ramo di skill preferito, ad esempio riducendone i lunghissimi tempi di ricarica, consentendo il ripristino dell’energia durante la sua esecuzione o potenziandone i danni con l’aggiunta di esplosivi attaccati alla lama. Parlando proprio dei tre distinti percorsi in cui incanalare i punti guadagnati salendo di livello, quelli riservati a Krieg dagli sviluppatori di Gearbox confermano in pieno le impressioni iniziali di un personaggio a dir poco estremo. Il ramo centrale, opportunamente chiamato Mania, è orientato prevalentemente al potenziamento degli attacchi corpo a corpo, con skill che consentono di aumentare i danni dei colpi del 250% o persino di tramutare Krieg in uno Psycho Duro, imponente dal punto di vista fisico ma anche e soprattutto sotto il profilo della forza bruta. Fra i tanti upgrade, salta poi all’occhio quello che consente al personaggio di non entrare in modalità Lotta per la Vita quando la salute raggiunge lo zero, permettendogli invece di lanciare candelotti di dinamite all’indirizzo degli avversari e premiandolo con un’immediata rinascita se riesce ad uccidere qualcuno prima della fine del conto alla rovescia. Sete di Sangue è invece il nome del ramo di abilità visualizzabile sulla sinistra dello schermo, dietro al quale si possono trovare caratteristiche congeniali ad uno sfruttamento più classico dell’arsenale a propria disposizione. Tutto ruota attorno a dei bonus cumulabili eliminando nemici in rapida successione con armi da fuoco, granate o attacchi corpo a corpo: un percorso non consigliabile ai giocatori particolarmente sbadati, dato che per massimizzare i benefici dei vari skill è necessario tenere costantemente d’occhio le icone che segnalano quale tipo di strumento è opportuno usare per far continuare a correre il moltiplicatore dei danni. Certo è che la dedizione in questo campo viene ripagata con abilità avanzate particolarmente potenti, come quella che fa susseguire delle esplosioni nova all’abbattimento dei nemici e che può provocare degli spaventosi effetti domino nelle situazioni più affollate. L’ultimo -e più folle- ramo di skill è denominato Infernale, grazie al quale Krieg trae tutta una serie di vantaggi nell’incendiarsi, dalla riduzione dei danni fino all’aumento della potenza dei propri attacchi: anche in questo ambito non mancano le abilità speciali, come quelle che consentono di sputare fiamme o di generare delle palle di fuoco che investono i nemici ogni qual volta si viene colpiti. Nonostante Krieg sia senza dubbio un personaggio di rottura rispetto a tutte le altre classi di Borderlands 2, è difficile non scorgere alcune forzature che lo rendono un DLC senza dubbio meno riuscito ed appetibile di quello dedicato a Gaige la Mechromante. Il paradosso principale sta nella discutibile efficacia di una figura pesantemente sbilanciata verso gli attacchi corpo a corpo in uno sparatutto nel quale le armi da fuoco sono un elemento quasi sacro: giocando nei panni di Krieg, bisogna sottostare a regole completamente diverse dagli standard da sempre propugnati da Gearbox, attaccando quindi a testa bassa, puntando alla dilapidazione della salute piuttosto che alla sua preservazione e soprattutto mettendo in conto la possibilità di ritrovarsi a terra molto più spesso che con una classe convenzionale. Va ammesso che l’idea di avere uno Psycho all’interno del proprio gruppo può essere stuzzicante, anche solo per la sua propensione ad attirare su di sé le attenzioni dei nemici assorbendo grandi quantità di danno: tuttavia, vestirne i panni non ci è parsa un’esperienza particolarmente godibile proprio per i motivi elencati poco sopra. Quello di Krieg appare dunque come un esperimento non troppo riuscito da parte degli sviluppatori di ribaltare completamente le convenzioni tipiche del gameplay di Borderlands 2, un compito troppo gravoso per poter essere portato a temine con successo da un solo personaggio scaricabile, che oltretutto arriva quando il gioco è oramai uscito da sette mesi ad un prezzo peraltro obiettivamente esagerato. Il mondo dei videogiochi visto dal lato degli sviluppatori riserverà delle sorprese?

Game Dev Tycoon di Greenheart Games è proprio ciò che il titolo suggerisce: un gestionale dedicato alle software house. Il tentativo è quello di rendere in meccaniche videoludiche il mondo dello sviluppo dei videogiochi visto dall’interno. BioShock Infinite rosica! Si parte in un garage, con un mercato piccolo e formato da poche macchine di riferimento. Le tecnologie a disposizione sono scarse e si lavora essenzialmente da soli, sperando di riuscire a produrre un titolo di successo, cercando nel frattempo di fare qualche lavoretto per tirare a campare e di fare ricerche a livello tecnologico per migliorare i prodotti offerti. Chiuso il primo titolo si ha quindi l’emozione di inviarlo alle varie testate specializzate che dovranno giudicarlo, determinandone il successo o meno. Arrivati i voti non resta che attendere la risposta del mercato per poi dedicarsi allo sviluppo di un secondo titolo… e poi di un terzo, di un quarto e così via fino ai blockbuster ultra commerciali tripla A. Come funziona lo sviluppo? In modo molto semplice e intuitivo. Per prima cosa occorre scegliere il genere, l’ambientazione, la piattaforma su cui pubblicare e il motore da utilizzare, senza dimenticare di dare un nome alla propria opera. Quindi si passa allo sviluppo, diviso in tre fasi distinte che possiamo dividere in progettazione, sviluppo vero e proprio e affinamento. Ognuna ha tre voci da occupare e vari extra selezionabili, che però vanno prima ricercati. All’inizio c’è un solo sviluppatore disponibile, ma salendo di livello e allargando l’attività se ne potranno assumere altri, che potranno essere assegnati ai singoli aspetti della produzione. Il nostro piccolo studio di sviluppo deve crescere con il mercato, che diventerà sempre più complicato a causa dell’aumento delle macchine da gioco, della necessità di fare marketing, della definizione delle dimensione dei progetti, dell’aumento di complessità delle tecnologie usate e così via. Lo scopo è ovviamente vendere copie e fare soldi, cercando di stare sul mercato con prodotti validi ed evitando di fallire. Da un certo punto in poi si potrà lavorare anche per dei publisher, limitando i ricavi sulle singole copie vendute, ma aumentando enormemente le vendite stesse. Dal lato dello sviluppo

Game Dev Tycoon nasce evidentemente con la voglia di andare oltre il gameplay casual di Game Dev Story per sistemi mobili. Greenheart Games è riuscita a rendere abbastanza bene la storia e la crescita del mercato videoludico, con la sua problematica frammentazione, creando allo scopo un flusso di eventi collaterali che fanno da sfondo all’azione principale. Il problema però è che di fronte a tanta buona volontà e tante buone idee, spesso la realizzazione è troppo sbrigativa. La software house è cresciuta Proviamo a spiegarci meglio con un esempio concreto. Come già detto, sviluppato un videogioco bisogna attendere i giudizi della stampa specializzata, espressi nei classici voti, e poi saggiare le reazioni del mercato. Il problema è che le reazioni della critica sono molto ballerine ed è difficile determinare un modus operandi per fare bene (è un qualche messaggio nemmeno troppo occulto?). Spesso sembra che i voti vengano dati a caso anche se si sono applicate tutte le accortezze necessarie, investendo ad esempio in un nuovo motore grafico e assegnando sviluppatori di alto livello ai vari aspetti della produzione. Insomma, in molti frangenti si è costretti a domandarsi come mai non si siano raggiunti i risultati sperati, ma non esistono nel gioco strumenti che permettano di capirlo. Bisogna andare a intuito. Ma l’intuito paga? Non sempre. Ad esempio non è chiaro come mai in una partita la realizzazione di un simulatore di vita per PC ci abbia resi ricchi, mentre nella successiva abbia prodotto un numero irrisorio di copie vendute e giudizi tiepidi. È vero che a volte il motivo dell’insuccesso è evidente (se si produce un simulatore horror per una console portatile non bisogna attendersi grosse vendite), ma in molti casi ci si trova con insuccessi inspiegabili, mentre in altri con successi altrettanto inspiegabili. Alla lunga la percezione della casualità in certe meccaniche finisce per indispettire e alienare l’interesse nei confronti del gioco.
